GAINESVILLE, FL (May 2010): The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering bestowed its annual honors on its students at its annual spring banquet. Ph.D. student Steffen Rebannack won the Graduate Student Teaching Award. Rebannack, advised by Dr. Panos Pardalos, plans to join the faculty at the Colorado School of Mines this fall. This year’s Graduate Student Research Award was shared by Petros Xanthopoulos, for his work in the area of data mining for biomedical applications, and Kwanghun Chung, for his work in nonlinear and integer programming. Xanthopoulus, also advised by Pardalos, plans to graduate next year. Chung, advised by Dr. J. P. Richard, plans to head to CORE, a research center for operations research in Belgium, before heading back to Korea where he hopes to teach. Kristin Dean, currently a master’s student participating in the 4/1 program (combined B.S.-M.S. program), received the Patterson Scholarship, generously provided by Emeritus Professor Dick Patterson and his wife Carolyn. Dean is interning for IBM this summer in her hometown of Austin, TX.
