Abstract: What is an Industrial and Systems Engineer doing at a Hospital?

With today’s growing population, increased life expectancy, and potential pandemics, it is crucial to support healthcare systems with the rising number of challenges that come from increased demand. This research seminar will provide an overview of the role of Industrial and Systems Engineers in the design and improvement of patient-centered health systems. Since healthcare is highly human-oriented, this type of research allows for the integration of engineering methods founded on human factors, simulation modelling, decision making, and multi-criteria optimization. The overarching goal of my research is to develop state-of-the-art analytical models and methodologies that successfully integrate cognitive science, human factors, psychology, decision-making models, and operations research, looking at both the patient and the healthcare provider holistically. Topics such as the integration of point of care technologies and human decision-making, the development of decision-support systems, and the analysis of cognitive aspects such as mental workload in healthcare applications will be discussed.
