Abstract: Synchromodal Freight Transportation Network Design

In this presentation, Nasibeh would talk about her teaching philosophy, interest and experience first. Then she would talk to you about her current research which is about a novel methodology named Synchromodal Transportation System, initiated around 2010 in the European Commission.

To elaborate, think of freights that are moved all around the world from different origins to destinations using a wide range of transportation modes. The shipment of goods with more than one mode of transportation encourages all stockholders to take advantage of all modes: accessibility of trucks, the reliability of trains, low cost of barges, and speed of airplanes, but dealing with all of these variabilities at the same time is challenging. Typically, the models address these challenges with terms such as multimodal, intermodal, and co-modal and the most recent one, synchromodal transport. Among them, synchromodality is a promising way of bringing more efficiency into networks by flexible selection of service providers, but it is still in its early stages of development. In her research, different types of mathematical models for routing and scheduling of such systems are presented. These models have considered the infrastructural configuration of the network, the characteristics of the freight, the transportation/transshipment cost and time, penalties for delays at terminals, over-due cost at the destination, and the opening/closing times of the terminals. To show the practicality of these models, some case studies within the US are defined, and the models are tested and analyzed against them.
