Cole Smith, Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, secured a grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) to study network security.  Specifically, the grant will allow Dr. Smith and his students to study problems of how and where to deploy a set of sensors across a theater in order to monitor a set of targets.  Unlike previous work in the area, this research will consider uncertainties, such as the possibility of sensors failing or sensors providing false information.  The research will draw on, and develop new, techniques in both optimization (integer and stochastic optimization) and game theory.  The grant provides funding of roughly $340,000 over three years.
