Abstract Title: Going Beyond Accuracy: System Informatics and Data Analytics for Smart and Connected Manufacturing Systems

The rapid growth of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies has led to an ever-increasing number of smart and connected manufacturing systems and a large amount of data collected from various sources. It creates unprecedented opportunities to develop advanced methodologies for (i) the real-time access to the in-process data, (ii) the sensing and interaction with the internal system status and external environment, (iii) the use of diverse data sources, and (iv) the smart decision making tailored to the unique condition of each system. Nonetheless, the data heterogeneity and complexity of smart and connected systems pose new challenges in monitoring, modeling, and predicting the manufacturing system status.

This presentation will introduce my research in system informatics and data analysis for smart and connected manufacturing systems integrating engineering domain knowledge with in-process data streams to achieve better process modeling, quality control, and performance improvement. This presentation will discuss research opportunities, challenges, and advancements, especially how data science methodologies can capture the maximum benefits of data collected from advanced manufacturing systems to not only achieve high modeling and prediction accuracy, but also extract valuable insights and basis for data-driven decision making.

About Minhee Kim

Minhee Kim is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research interests are system informatics and data analytics for modeling, inference, and prediction in smart and connected systems with applications including advanced manufacturing and nuclear energy. She received her M.S. degree in statistics from the same university in 2021 and her B.S. degree in industrial and management engineering from Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), South Korea, in 2017. She is a recipient of the Gilbreth Memorial Fellowship and the Mary G. and Joseph Natrella Scholarship. She was awarded the Honorable mention in the QSR Best student poster competition in INFORMS and second place in the IISE conference ES track Best Student Paper Award.
