Title: Prototyping tools for validation of PSS offerings: augmented and virtual reality tools
Abstract:
The development of a Product-Service System (PSS) to fulfill customer needs through innovative and sustainable business models that integrate products, services, networks of actors, and supporting infrastructure is seen as the way to grow competitiveness and obtain better economic and environmental results.

The PSS validation is one of the major challenges during product and service development and can ensure the effectiveness of integrated solution. One way to validate whether the requirements defined for the solution meet the expectations and needs of customers, from the early stages of the development process, is through prototyping. The use of prototypes can enable the integration of the customer in the development process and provide the opportunity to test the solution front the early stages, identify points of failure and improving opportunities and reproduce the solution allowing that PSS value could be evaluated.

Prototyping PSS offerings often requires the use of high-fidelity techniques or a mixture of techniques from both perspectives: low (e.g., paper sketches, cardboard mockup) and high-fidelity (physical and virtual mock-up, software, virtual simulation). The low fidelity of traditional techniques can be limited to validating aspects of experience and services contained in various PSS offerings.

The use of technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), are being studied for developing High-Fidelity prototypes in the PSS development process, focus on the tangible product part. However, the use of VR and AR for prototyping Product-Service System in a holistic view, considering different PSS business models, has not been widely reported in the literature. Moreover, it is noticed that there is a gap in the literature about which prototyping tools are more appropriate depending on the type of PSS offering (product-oriented, or result-oriented or oriented) and how to validate the sustainable aspects of the PSS offerings.

In conclusion, existing different prototyping tools that are not easily adapted to validate PSS offerings due to the complexity and interdependencies between PSS features. New approaches are needed to focus on the tangible product part but also on the evaluation of service activities in an integrated way.

About Maria Auxiliadora Cannarozzo Tinoco, Ph.D.

Dr. Maria Auxiliadora Cannarozzo Tinoco is a Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brasil, where she has been a faculty member since 2015. She is a Tenured Assistant Professor in undergraduate and graduate programs. She obtained his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering (1998) from Universidad de Carabobo in Valencia, Venezuela. She concluded her Ph.D. (2011) and her master’s degree (2006) in Industrial Engineering from the UFRGS. From 2018 to 2020 she served as Undergraduate Program Coordinator and from 2016 to 2018 as Undergraduate Program Vice-coordinator in Industrial Engineering. She acts as an Incubators Manager at the UFRGS Scientific and Technological Park – Zenit and a researcher in the Center of Sustainable Innovation (NIS) at UFRGS. She is a technical coordinator of the Modernization of Undergraduate Education Program (PMG) in Engineering School at UFRGS, promoted by a Brazilian agency CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) and the Fulbright Commission from 2019 to 2026. Currently, she is a visiting professor at University of Central Florida under the supervision of Prof. Luis Rabelo from Industrial Engineering and Management System Department. Her research interests lie in the area of Service Management, Quality Management, Sustainable Product-Service System Development and prototyping, and Engineering Education.
