Abstract: Solving Complex Combinatorial Scheduling Problems in Healthcare with Multiple Objective Criteria
Scheduling problems can be very interesting mathematically because of their complex combinatorial structure. In many fields, and in healthcare applications in particular, they are also often interesting because their objective function is not well-defined. Not only are there multiple objective criteria, but the relative weights of these criteria may not be identifiable – in fact, the decision makers themselves may not have fully-defined preferences.
I will discuss our experiences in solving real-world applications of such problems, the way in which we engage both students and clinical collaborators in the process, and the remaining challenges yet to be resolved.
