Abstract: Optimization Models in Supply Chains with Supplier Selection and Channel Allocation Decisions

The nature of optimal procurement and inventory decisions at any stage of the supply chain depends directly on the availability of qualified suppliers and the quality of the products they are able to provide. For any producer planning to satisfy a set of future demands, it is essential to understand the scope of suppliers’ capabilities, constraints, and pricing terms, as these factors will affect not only the producer’s costs but also the ability to manage demand risk under uncertainty. This seminar describes my work on inventory planning and optimization problems in supply chains where a set of suppliers are available with various pricing terms and reliabilities, the design of efficient solution algorithms and techniques for this problem class, and challenges of supplier selection and risk management in the global market.

With the appearance and growth of online shopping as a very convenient channel that helps the customers browse various products easily and permits the sellers to have more variety in the collection that they offer, usually at a lower cost, it is important to look at the internet channel more closely and account for the complications and benefits brought to the picture by this option. This seminar also looks into an assortment optimization problem with an online channel available alternative to the physical store and discusses the challenges associated with this option.
