Abstract: Systems Approaches for Mitigating Substance Use Disorder

In this presentation, after giving a brief introduction to some of the challenges of substance use and addiction, Paul will discuss three community-based efforts for addressing substance use disorder.  In the first example he will present a simple dynamic model to estimate the comparative effectiveness of four hospital-based interventions for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).  In the second effort, he describes an open scheduling approach to significantly reduce the time of early jail release to induction of medication assisted treatment.  In the last case, he examined the impact that state policy around prescription drug monitoring has had on opioid-based “doctor shopping” in Indiana.  He will conclude the talk by giving a very brief overview of his other research interests.
