Yongpei Guan, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) at the University of Florida, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE). Guan has been recognized for his significant contributions to the industrial & systems engineering discipline.

The Fellow award is the highest classification of IISE membership. Each year, the Society selects up to 20 outstanding leaders in ISE, who have achieved nationally recognized accomplishments in their career. Eligibility requirements include an IISE senior membership level for at least 10 consecutive years.

Guan’s research contributions in methodology innovations for data-driven risk-averse stochastic optimization, and modeling innovations and algorithm developments for energy systems operations has led to multiple award recognitions, such as an NSF Career Award in 2008 and an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award in 2010. Currently, Guan is working with Midcontinent Independent System Operator, a non-profit company that provides electric power transmission systems that monitors multi-state electric grids, on optimal use of over 1,400 power generators.

Guan’s contributions to ISE service have also been of great significance and are highly recognizable. He served as a general chair for the ISE Research Conference in 2014. He also played the leading role in founding the  Energy Systems Division of IISE and served as the founding president. He currently serves as an IISE Transactions Department Editor. Within UF ISE, Guan has served as faculty advisor for the IISE student chapter, a role for which he recently received the 2018 IISE Global Faculty Advisor Award.

Guan has been a faculty member of ISE at UF since 2009, including serving as the acting chair for the department in 2015-2016. He is currently the director of the Computation and Stochastic Optimization Lab and a co-director for the Supply Chain and Logistics Engineering Center. In the past year, he was also named Graduate Program Coordinator for the department.

“Dr. Guan has an outstanding research record in the area of applied operations research with a focus on energy systems. His work has substantial recognition in the IISE community. He has also made major service contributions to our department and discipline. We are fortunate to have him as a colleague at UF,” said David Kaber, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering.

Guan was recognized for the award at the IISE Annual Conference in May 2019.
