Miami, FL (April, 2011): The widening of the Panama Canal will allow larger container ships to sail directly to the East Coast for subsequent distribution of the cargo. As noted by Jorge Arrizurieta of the Miami Herald, this represents a major opportunity for Florida ports, including Miami, Jacksonville and others. In addition to the deepening of the ports, warehouses and rail and road improvements may be needed to keep up with the increased loads.
