Departmental Scholarships

Dr. Richard Patterson, Professor Emeritus in ISE at the University of Florida, was a faculty member in ISE from 1963 through 1970, after graduating with his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He was a preeminent researcher in stochastic processes and mathematical modeling and had a very long and internationally recognized career in the field of quantitative ISE studies.

In 1970, Dr. Patterson returned to the University of Michigan, where he had a very successful 26-year career. Afterward, Dr. Patterson re-joined the ISE faculty in1996 as a visiting professor and remained at UF until he retired in 2001. He and his wife Carolyn established the Patterson Graduate Fellowship for outstanding Master’s students in ISE in 2005.

• The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America
• The applicant’s GPA must be at least 3.5

Mr. Harold D. Haldeman, Jr. was born in Tampa, Florida in 1924. After completing one year of study at the University of Florida, Gainesville, he volunteered for the Navy in 1944 and served as an Aviation Electrician for two years until the end of the war. Later, he returned to the University of Florida and graduated with a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Upon graduation, Haldeman made his mark in wholesale lumber and logistics. Within two years of graduation, he became general manager of Forest Products Corporation of Ft. Lauderdale and shortly thereafter, was named the President and the CEO. He also served as the Florida Manager for American Forest Products from California. In 2011, he was initiated into UF ISE Hall of Fame in recognition of his distinguished record of leadership in his life’s work. The same year, he established the The Harold D. Haldeman, Jr. Fellowship in 2011 to support graduate fellowships in ISE.

• The applicant’s GPA must be at least 3.5

Mr. Venkat A. Mohan is an Operating Partner at Norwest Venture Partners. Mr. Mohan focuses on Internet-based solutions, including identity-focused solutions. He joined Norwest Venture Partners in 2000. He served as the President and Chief Operating Officer at OnDisplay, Inc. which he helped take public in 1999 and which was subsequently acquired by Vignette Corporation. He served as a Vice President of Global Marketing and E-Commerce at GEIS. He served as the President and Chief Operating Officer at CADIS, Inc. He served as an Executive Vice President of Marketing at VMX, Inc. and Chief Executive Officer of Wipro Ltd. He was a Strategic Advisor to Arbortext.

He has more than 25 years of experience in marketing and general management. Mr. Mohan has an MBA with high distinction from Harvard Business School, where he was elected a Baker Scholar. Mr. Mohan also holds a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Florida and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. He and his wife Roopa established The Venkat and Roopa Mohan Scholarships in ISE for outstanding Master’s students in ISE in 2018.

• The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen
• The applicant’s GPA must be at least 3.5

The ISE Graduate Research Award was established in 2001 to recognize Ph.D. students with research responsibilities for their outstanding research contributions.

• The applicant must be a student pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering
• The applicant’s GPA must be at least 3.5

ISE Graduate Teaching Award was established in 2001 to recognize Ph.D. students with teaching responsibilities for their dedication to UF ISE students and outstanding teaching contributions.

Dr. Donald W. Hearn was department chair of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) from 1997 to 2007.  He received an undergraduate degree in physics at the University of North Carolina as a Morehead Scholar, and received master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Johns Hopkins University in management science and operations research.  In 2004, he was elected a Fellow of The Institute of Operations Research and Management Science.  He was a preeminent scholar in applied optimization and transportation science.

From 2007 to 2012, he was program manager for Optimization and Discrete Mathematics at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). From 2015, he was a co-program manager and consultant for Service, Manufacturing and Operations Research at the National Science Foundation.  He was a software consultant for various federal agencies, including the USDA (environmental impacts of pesticides), HUD (new community development), FAA (aviation system maintenance) and DOT (urban transportation network models and algorithms).

Dr. Hearn passed away in July 2021 and is remembered fondly as a leader and mentor in the ISE field.  He and his wife Joyce established The Donald and Joyce Hearn Graduate Research Award in 2011 to recognize an ISE Ph.D. student making contributions to the applications and theory of operations research.

Linda S. Parker Hudson is a businesswoman, keynote speaker and chair/CEO of the Cardea Group, a consultancy that specializes in C-suite transitions, strategic business transformations and critical organizational changes. She graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering in 1972.

After starting off as a program manager in Harris Corporation (1972 – 1976), she went on to be president in Ford Aerospace (1976 – 1985), Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin (1985 – 1999), General Dynamics Corporation (1999 – 2006). She joined BAE Systems, a global, U.S.-based defense, aerospace and security company in 2006 as the president and CEO and retired in 2014. Often referred to as the “first lady of defense,” Linda was a trailblazer when the industry had few women. She continues to serve on the boards including Bank of America, Southern Company and Ingersoll Rand. In 2009, she was initiated into UF ISE Hall of Fame in recognition of her distinguished record of leadership in her chosen profession. She established The Linda Parker Hudson Fellowship to support outstanding students in ISE. Linda was most recently nominated to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and she will be inducted in 2019.
