FAQ for Prospective Master’s Students
What are the requirements for admission?
Admissions decisions are made by the Graduate Committee based on a number of factors including past academic performance, GRE scores (Quantitative, Analytical, and Verbal sections), letters of recommendation, the student’s statement of purpose, and the TOEFL score (if required). How long does the admissions process take?
The admissions process can take several months depending on various factors. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all appropriate materials are forwarded to the graduate school and the department. The earlier the graduate school and department receive all application materials, the quicker the process will proceed. International students should apply at least nine months prior to the Fall semester for Fall admission and at least six months prior to Spring semester for Spring admission. Domestic students should apply at least six months prior to Fall semester and four months prior to Spring semester. We do not admit students beginning their graduate program in Summer semesters.
What is the availability of financial aid?
The department does not offer assistantships to incoming Masters students. The only financial relief available from UF-ISE for incoming Master’s students is awarded at the time of admission acceptance, the UF-ISE Graduate Student Selection Committee may select some applicants to receive an Achievement Award for New Engineering Graduate Students, which is a partial tuition waiver for up to 36 semester credit hours. The award is granted by the Committee and based on academic record of achievement in an undergraduate degree program as well as other accomplishments. Recipients are determined by Committee at the time of application processing and review.
A limited number of MS students are able to obtain assistantships after they arrive on campus, but there is no guarantee of this and it is up to the individual student to pursue assistantship opportunities upon arrival. Approximately 5-10 percent of Master’s degree students are able to obtain assistantships after arriving. Prospective Master’s level students are expected to have the resources to finance their graduate education. Email requests for assistantships made directly to faculty members are not encouraged and typically are unsuccessful.
How do I check my admission status?

If after that time you still cannot see the status of your application, you can contact the ISE Academic Advising representative at grad-advisors@ise.ufl.edu. Please allow sufficient time for a response due to the volume of inquiries and applications we receive.
FAQ for Current Master’s Students
What courses can I take outside of ISE for my elective credits?
Courses within the College of Engineering and ISE-related disciplines like Statistics, Applied Mathematics, and ISOM (Information Systems and Operations Management) are automatically approved as electives for Master’s students. Students wishing to take a course from a department not listed here should contact the ISE graduate advising team for approval prior to registering for the course.
Can I take undergraduate courses and apply them towards my Master’s degree?
The graduate school allows graduate students to apply up to 6 credits of undergraduate work towards a graduate degree, provided that these credits are at the 3000 level or above, and are taken outside the major department (you cannot count ISE undergraduate courses).
Does the seminar course ESI 6918 apply to my 31 required credits for graduation?
Yes, it does.
Is there a limit on the number of ESI 6912 and EIN 6905 credits I can take?
Yes, you are limited to no more than 8 credits of ESI 6912 and no more than 9 credits of EIN 6905.
I have taken all of my required courses. Are there any constraints on the remaining courses I will take to fulfill my degree requirements?
After fulfilling all of the required courses, the student has a good deal of flexibility in choosing additional courses toward the 31 credit requirement. By this time the student should have named an adviser and should work with the adviser to choose proper courses for their degree. One important requirement that must be followed is that at least half of all credits counted toward the degree must be in the ISE department (i.e., EIN or ESI courses).
I plan to do a thesis. How many committee members do I need?
A Master’s degree with thesis requires at least two committee members and does not require a committee member from an outside department.
I am an International student. Can I drop a course in the middle of a semester?
International students are required to take at least 9 credits in a fall or spring semester and at least 2 credits in summer (rules may be different for students on assistantship). You can not drop below these limits or you may lose your visa status. You may be able to drop a course, but will likely need to add another course to maintain the minimum number of credits for International students.
Does ESI 6905 Analytical Methods in ISE apply to my 31 required credits for graduation?
No, it does not.
