Updates for Fall 2014

08-Aug-2013

  1. Instead of the technical electives, there is a requirement for general and technical electives. For the latter, students must choose one of the following options:

a. Complete 9 hours of technical electives. b. Complete 6 hours of technical electives and 3 hours of general electives.

Definitions: Technical electives are 3000-level or above courses with significant scientific and/or technical content. For example, see the pre-approved list of technical electives at http://www.ise.ufl.edu/current-students/undergraduate-students/technical-electives/ .

General electives are 3000-level or above courses required for a minor degree program or in areas complementary to industrial and systems engineering. For example, see the pre-approved list of general electives at http://www.ise.ufl.edu/current-students/undergraduate-students/technical-electives/.

c. Students can petition to take courses not on the pre-approved lists.

d. Students who choose Option (a) (9 hours of technical electives) can petition to use the old list of pre-approved technical electives.

e. Students who choose Option (b) (6 hours of technical electives and 3 hours of general electives) must use the new list of pre-approved courses.

2 .The course EIN 3101C: Introduction to ISE has been cancelled. At the first faculty meeting in the fall semester, the faculty will consider permanently removing EIN3101C from our undergraduate curriculum. If this measure passes, then we will inform you of a replacement for EIN3101C. In the near term, students, who cannot fulfill the EIN3101C (2 credits) requirement due to its cancellation, can replace the course with 2 credits of technical electives for now. For these students, they can do one of the following:

a. Complete 11 (9 of original requirement + 2 as EIN3101C replacement) credits of technical electives

b. Complete 8 (6 of original requirement + 2 as EIN3101C replacement) credits of technical electives and 3 credits of general electives.

3. We will announce the replacement for EIN3101C later in the fall semester. (Most likely, the replacement will be one of courses suitable as a technical elective.) After the announcement, students, who enrolled prior to Fall 2013, can petition to replace EIN3101C with other technical electives.

4. The course EIN 4321: Introduction to Energy Management has also been cancelled. To satisfying the thermodynamics requirement in our curriculum, you can take EML 3100: Thermodynamics or EML3007 (Elements of Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer) instead. While we do not anticipate that the cancellation of EIN4321 will be permanent, it is unlikely that it will be offered before Fall 2014. So, plan your class schedules during the next academic year accordingly.

5. The 3-time rule (see below) will be effective beginning this fall semester. Students who have already violated this rule will be given one attempt to pass (with a C grade or better) any classes that they have failed to complete in three attempts.

3-Time Rule: Students will be dis-enrolled from the ISE department if they fail to successfully complete a required course in ISE with C or better in three attempts. “Grades of H, I, N, U, W and WF are considered attempts. A registration canceled for non-payment is also considered an attempt.”
