Prospective UF grad students:
I’m happy to answer questions if I can, but questions regarding the Masters program should go to Dr. Petar Momcilovic. For the PhD program, I am the right person to ask.
If your questions regard how to apply, which documents to send, and other procedural questions, please send your email to Ms. Sara Pons. But first, please make sure that you have visited our guide to prospective students and carefully read the information contained in these pages.
Some advice for PhD applicants:
- The deadline is January 15, 2013 to apply for Fall 2013. (It’ll be 1/15/14 for Fall ’14. No more applications are being considered for 2012, and Spring PhD admission is uncommon.) We definitely want to have your applications! Please see http://www.ise.ufl.edu for more about our department, and how to apply.
- The number of ISE PhD applications has increased due to our program’s rise in popularity and ranking. For this reason, we definitely encourage you to meet the January 15 application deadline. If you are delayed, please alert us rather than not applying at all.
- What we look for in PhD applications: GREs are considered, but your grades in mathematically rigorous courses are far more important. Dissertations from our department require substantial technical depth, and we evaluate this aspect of your application very carefully.
- We absolutely look at every part of your application, from the statement of purpose to the letters of recommendation to the transcripts. On your statement, we look to see where your interests lie, how you would fit in our program, and what kind of research/educational experiences you have had that will help you succeed here. We are also evaluating your writing skills to some extent.
- Inspirational quotes do not improve your application. You should have a lot to say about why you belong here, and why UF is a good fit for your goals. Hence, it is not advantageous to waste space by quoting famous people.
- Please do not ask us for a preliminary assessment of your application. I cannot give you a preliminary assessment, even though I would like to help.
