President Calls for Possible Increase in Tuition for STEM Students

[Gainesville, FL]   According to a recent article written by Nathan Crabbe of the Gainesville Sun, University of Florida President Bernie Machen said “that students in the so-called STEM disciplines should pay more for their tuition than other students.”  STEM refers to degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  STEM programs, according to Machen, cost “more than other programs, so that should be reflected in tuition costs.”  The article mentions UF President Bernie Machen and FSU President Eric Barron both recently presented arguments to the House Education Committee in support of increasing STEM degree tuition rates.  The discussion about STEM degrees is a result of Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s “call for higher education reforms”.
