Rinker Materials (top)
Subject: IE at Rinker Materials
Presenter: Aldo Kafie
Location/Time: Weil Hall 279 / Friday 4:30 - 5:30pm

Industrial Engineering plays a major role in concrete production quality control and batch plant optimization. With the proper tools and support, an Industrial Engineer can help optimize production of concrete and consequently contribute to the success of the company.

Florida Power & Light (top)
Subject: Evaluating Information
Presenter: V
al Miklausich
Location/Time: Reitz Union Room 282 / Friday 4:30 - 5:30pm

Evaluating information is about  asking questions to develop a
deeper understanding of interrelationships to achieve desired results.

Ergonomic Technologies Corp (ergonomic consultant) (top)
Subject: Ergonomics: An Essential Business Element
Presenter: Cindy Roth
Location/Time: Mechanical & Aerospace Building B (MAEB) 229 / Friday 4:30 - 5:30pm

Shand's MECS (healthcare consultants) (top)

About Shand's MECS:
MECS mission is to function as in-house management consultants who assist Shands HealthCare management in identifying ways to improve processes and enhance the effective deployment of resources (people, equipment, facilities, supplies) in order to:

  • Improve financial performance
  • Improve quality
  • Reduce turnaround time (TAT)
  • Improve customer satisfaction

Subject: Management Engineering Approach to Improving Throughput in a Clinical Setting
Presenter: Roque Perez
Location/Time: Weil Hall 273 / Friday 4:30 - 5:30pm

This workshop presents an approach called “Structured Estimating Technique” used in a clinical setting in order to develop an estimate of the discharge planning process used at Shands at UF.

Agenda:

  • Presenter's Bio
  • Current State
  • Methodology
  • Problem Formulation
  • Background on Structured Estimated Technique
  • Hands-on Practical Exercise
  • Proposed Solution
  • Conclusion and Recommendations

Subject: TBA
Presenter: Ashley Benedict & Robin Main
Location/Time: Reitz Union Grand Ballroom Salon G / Saturday 10:30 - 11:45am

This workshop discusses different industrial engineering tools and techniques that are applied in the field of healthcare.  Facility planning, time estimating, process flowcharting and data analysis will be covered.

Lockheed Martin (top)
Subject: The Ethics Challenge
Presenter: Jim McCann
Location/Time: Reitz Union Grand Ballroom Salon C / Saturday 9:00 - 10:15am, 10:30 - 11:45am

The group will be divided into teams to discuss ethical decision making. The teams will be presented with real life industry scenarios (4-6 depending on time) and given multiple answer choices. The most correct answer will result in the most points. The points will enable the team to move their piece around the “Ethics Challenge Board”. The object is to collect ethic tokens (as you strategically move around the board). The team with the most tokens wins the game.

The Quality Catalyst (top)
Subject: Statistical Process Control (SPC)
Presenter: Ron Sedlock
Location/Time: Reitz Union Grand Ballroom Salon G / Saturday 9:00 - 10:15am

This workshop will show how to decided if an industrial process is running properly or needs adjustment based on data.  Also how to know if a process is capable of producing product to specification  -- what is known as a process capability or performance study.  An overview of the current trend of Six Sigma quality will be presented.  Bring a calculator to do some process analysis examples in the workshop.

General Dynamics (top)
Subject: Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Presenter: Angelo Saitta
Location/Time: Reitz Union Grand Ballroom Salon D / Saturday 9:00 - 10:15am

Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a powerful analytical tool used examine potential failure modes of both product and process.  The FMEA is one of the most powerful tools that can be used in preventing problems before they occur.  The FMEA is a multiple use tool which assists in the optimization of risk based on three primary elements, namely feature severity, probability of occurrence of defects during processing, and the probability of detection through inspection or downstream operations.  The tool has been widely used in both the aerospace and military industries and is becoming the tool of choice by many commercial industries as well.  Applications include but are not limited to:

  • Product Design
  • Process Design
  • Gage Design
  • Tooling/Machine Selection
  • Product Safety Assessment

The FMEA is a precursor to error and mistake proofing as it assists in defining the high risk elements of design, process, and inspection.  The workshop will present the FMEA methodology, useful error and mistake proofing guidelines, and several examples of its use within the General Dynamics community.  The workshop will provide guidance in designing for safety and reliability as well as optimizing quality levels.

University of Florida Industrial & Systems Engineering Department (top)

Subject: Decision Support Systems
Presenter: Michelle Hanna
Location/Time: Reitz Union Grand Ballroom Salon H,G / Saturday 10:30 - 11:45am, 2:00 - 3:15pm

The ability to extract data from external sources and embed analytical decision models within larger systems is two of the most valuable  skills to acquire for students entering today's information technology (IT) dominated workplace. As companies install enterprise resource planning (ERP) packages and invest in building data warehouses, those who are able to create applications that interface with these systems and
analyze the data they provide will become increasingly valuable.  A decision support system (DSS) allows engineers to deal with vast  amounts of data and create easy-to-read, meaningful reports for decision  making.

This workshop will give you an overview of a DSS, how they can be used, and give case studies of DSS's created by UF students.  Presented by Michelle Hanna, PhD student at the University of Florida and past UF IIE President.

Subject: Origami Competition
Presenter: Stephen Richmond
Location/Time: Weil Hall 270 / Saturday 9:00am - 10:15am, 10:30 - 11:45am, 2:00 - 3:15pm

In this competition, schools will compete against one another making origami objects to see who can produce the most and best quality origami items.  This will test your team's communication, preparation, and attention to quality.  Please note, you CANNOT select this workshop when registering.  Schools can decide what time works best for them, and will be able to decide when to go to the competition.
